Box Score CANTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team paid a visit to Canton, Missouri, on Friday afternoon, looking for some redemption from last years' defeat and its first win on the 2014 season against Culver-Stockton College, but the Owls came up just short in a 3-2 (2OT) thriller.
After 106:00 minutes of play had concluded, most would agree that Friday's match-up was nothing like the previous meeting between these two teams.
The Owls (0-2-0), who were outshot by the Wildcats (3-0-1) in the 2013 meeting 25-15, outshot CSC in the first period of Friday's game and also in the first overtime period, however, it was the Wildcats who found the back of the net and escaped with the one goal victory.
In similar events to the Owls first game of the 2014 season, WWU was able to grab the early lead, as
Jamie Palermo scored her first goal on the season, off an assist from teammate
Jordan McNamara, just 4:29 minutes into the game.
CSC would shortly thereafter score the equalizer goal at the 10:04 mark, as midfielder, Callie Fackler, scored her first career goal, tying the game up 1-1.
With neither team scoring the rest of the first half, the Owls came out of the break, determined to take control of this game.
The team was able to do just that, as senior
Brittainy German scored her first goal on the year, at the 53:38 mark, giving the Owls a 2-1 lead over CSC. With that said, however, the Wildcats would not go away quietly, as Alyx Seats responded and tied the game up 2-2 in the 58
th minute.
The Owls would record two more shots and goalkeeper,
Brittany Griffin, would collect three saves, but the end of 90:00 minutes of play, it was off to overtime in Canton, Mo.
In the first overtime, it was all WWU, as they outshot CSC 3-0, and were led by
Alex Langford's two shots on goal, but neither team could find the back of the net, so one final 10:00 minute of play was needed.
Despite the offensive pressure in the first overtime from WWU, it was Seats scoring her second goal on the night for CSC in the 106
th minute, giving the Wildcats a 3-2 (2OT) victory.
Offensively, WWU was led by Palermo, as the senior tallied three shots and a goal, while German added two shots and a goal and McNamara contributed two shots, along with the lone assist on the night.
The team will return to action this Sunday, in its home opener against Westminster College. Kick-off is scheduled at 3:00 p.m.
