FULTON, Mo.— The William Woods University women's soccer team will look to continue its climb up the American Midwest Conference (AMC) standings on Tuesday night, as the Owls host Hannibal-LaGrange University. Kick-off starts at 5 p.m.
The Owls (5-6-2; 3-3-1 AMC), jumped up to fifth place overall in the AMC, after they picked up an impressive 3-1 victory over Freed-Hardeman University on Saturday afternoon.
The team got the scoring started at the 12:47 mark, as
Shelby Scanlan netted her second goal on the year, to give WWU a 1-0 lead.
WWU looked to be heading into halftime ahead 1-0, but the Lady Lions were able to score the equalizer with .08 seconds left in the half, which put the scoreboard at 1-1. That score remained the same until the 76
th minute, as
Elyssa Cappaert crossed the ball from the 18 yard box, inside the six, which allowed senior
Jordan McNamara to tip the ball in and give WWU a 1-0 lead.
A goal from
Jaclyn Zilch in the 86
th minute, her second on the year, put the stamp on the team securing a 3-1 win over Freed-Hardeman.
Offensively, the Owls totaled 16 shots, while in net, goaltenders
Ashley Parisi and
Rebecca Sturgess combined to make nine saves.
The win over FHU was number four in its last seven games and its first in front of the home crowd at Firley Field. During the last seven games, meanwhile, the team has outscored its opponents 15-8, which is a strong improvement from the first six outings on the year, where they totaled just two goals.
On the year, McNamara, a Blue Springs, Missouri, native, is leading the way with five goals and three assists for 13 points. Scanlan,
Renee Meyer, Zilch and
Halle Schroeder have each contributed two goals, while Schroeder leads the way with four assists.
In net, Parisi and Sturgess continue to command the net and make key saves when needed, as they have combined for 94 saves, for a save percentage of .803 and a goals against average of 1.77. Parisi, has started in all 13 games, making 75 saves, which is 36
th in the nation. Sturgess, a freshman, has improved each time she appeared in goal, making 17 saves, while allowing just three goals in seven games.
Last year, when WWU and HLGU met-up, the Owls won 4-1, as they got two goals from McNamara, while departed seniors
Jamie Palermo and
Rachel Meyer added a goal each.
This season, after winning three straight games early in September, the Lady Trojans (3-7-1; 3-4 AMC) have run into a tough stretch in its schedule, as they have lost four games in a row, while being outscored 11-1.
In its last time out, the Lady Trojans fell to Lindenwood University-Belleville 4-1, as they were outshot 24-10 in 90:00 minutes of action.
On the season, HLGU is led by Anna Alms having a team-high four goals and eight points. Isabella Zanzini and Abbie Boyer have found the back of the net twice, while three others have totaled one goal.
In goal, Tori Ditter has appeared in 11 games, and made 94 saves, which ranks her 14
th overall in the NAIA. She also has earned a save percentage of .817 and a goals against average of 1.87.
