Box Score 2 JOPLIN, Mo.- The No. 25 ranked William Woods University baseball team split its opening weekend series at the Joplin Tournament on Friday, as the Owls fell to (RV) Midland University 1-0 and then went on to defeat Benedictine College 6-1.
In the first game against the Warriors,
John Cavness pitched six shutout innings, but Cavness was unable to pick up the victory, as Midland was able to score a rare run on reliever
James Ball, which allowed them to hold on for the 1-0 win.
Then later in the afternoon, the Owls picked up its first win at the Joplin Tournament in game two by plating six runs against the ravens.
Jordan Dey and
Larry Price led the way for WWU, both going 2-for-4, while Dey collected two RBI's and Price scored a run and nabbed a stolen base.
Alex St. Pierre also picked up a pair of hits on the day, while
Austin Clapp went 1-for-2 at the plate and scored two runs.
On the mound, the Owls had a strong display, starting pitcher
Adam Brush only allowed one run in three innings of work, while
Ryan Yuengel came in relief, as the senior threw four shutout innings to collect the win. Yuengel only gave up three hits, walked one batter and posted four strikeouts in the Owls 6-1 victory.
The Owls return to play tomorrow in day two of the Joplin Tournament, as the team gets a chance for redemption against Midland University at 10:00 a.m. and then looks to sweep the ravens later in the afternoon at 3:00 pm.
