Owls In Search For Season Series Sweep Against Harris-Stowe State On Tuesday Night

Johnson, is averaging 10.6 points per game, while collecting a team-high in rebounds (5.2 per game) and blocks (14)
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University men's basketball team looks to snap its two game skid with a key American Midwest Conference victory on Tuesday night, as the team pays a visit to Harris-Stowe State University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
 
The Owls (9-16; 6-11 AMC) are coming off a 95-84 loss to Lindenwood University-Belleville this past Saturday afternoon. WWU, who were in search of its 10th win on the season, certainly came out of the game with the momentum to capture it Saturday afternoon, as the team jumped out with the quick momentum in the match-up.
 
After controlling most of the first frame and holding onto a lead over the Lynxs after 15:00 minutes of play. WWU would then go cold from the floor in the last minutes till half, as the Lynxs took its first lead of the game at the 4:30 mark, making the score 36-34. LU held onto its lead to close the first 20:00 minutes of play, heading into the locker room with a six-point advantage over WWU, 47-41.
 
In the first frame both teams shot over a red hot 55 percent from the field, leading the way for the Owls was Derrick Hayes, as he netted 11 points, on 5-of-7 shooting from the field.
 
In the second half, LU-Bellevile came out with urgency, as the team pushed its lead to double-digits for the first time in the game (51-41). As the time continued to tick down in the final frame, WWU would go on a 8-1 run, getting the Owls within three points (79-76) of LU-Belleville. However, that would be as close William Woods would get, as the Lynxs hit the necessary free throws down the stretch and held off WWU for the 11 point win and sweep the regular season series.
 
Nate Bitner, the Kearney, Missouri native, paced the way for WWU, as the senior totaled 19 points and seven rebounds, while he was a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Ryan Hill chipped in 15 points, on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and also had an impressive night from downtown, draining 3-of-4. The last Owl to end the afternoon in double figures was Hayes, as the senior posted 13 points.
 
On the season, DJ Johnson and Hill pace the way for the Owls, averaging 10.6 and 10.0 points per game, respectively. Johnson, the Topeka, Kansas native also leads the Owls in rebounds (5.2 per game) and blocks with 14 on the year.
 
Bitner has became an impact offensively for WWU, as the senior has pushed his averaged to 9.5 points per game, while shooting 42.9 percent from the field and 39.8 percent from the three point line.
 
Back on January 6th of this year was the last meeting between Harris-Stowe and William Woods, as the Owls escaped with the 65-56 win over the Hornets. In the nine-point victory, Jarett Boss recorded a career-high 18 points for the Owls off the bench.
 
HSSU is currently 5-19 on the season and 4-13 in AMC play, as the Hornets are coming off a four-point (68-64) victory over Missouri Baptist. The team had four players to end the night in double figures to help guide them over the Spartans.
 
Offensively, Trevor Roberts leads the Hornets on the season, averaging 15.1 points per game, connecting on 43.7 percent of his shots from the field and shooting a team-high 39.7 percent from beyond the arc.
 
Another key player for HSSU is Jalen Flectcher, who is averaging 12.7 points per game and leading the team on the boards with 110 on the season (4.8 per game).
 
The Owls look to start its busy three game series this week with a season series sweep over the Hornets to capture its 10th win on the season.
