FULTON, Mo. - The William Woods University men's basketball team will look for an important American Midwest Conference win in its final regular season home game, on Senior Day, as the team hosts Park University. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
The Owls (10-17; 7-12 AMC) escaped a 71-57 victory against St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Thursday night, collecting its 10
th win on the year and the season series sweep over the Eutectics.
The Owls closed the game, shooting 42.6 percent from the field and went a blistering 7-of-16 from the three point line (43.8 percent). Alex Mulvihill, the Collierville, Tennessee native, paced the way for WWU off the bench, collecting six of the teams seven three pointers, while recording a career-high 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Bitner, added 10 points and six rebounds on the night, as
Darrien Dickey nabbed a team-high 10 rebounds on the night.
On the season,
DJ Johnson leads the Owls in several categories, which includes, points (10.5 per game), rebounds (5.3 per game) and blocks with 17 on the year.
Ryan Hill and Bitner are two other impact players for WWU, as both averaging nine points per game and shooting over 40 percent from the field.
Following the women's game and prior to the men's game, the team will be honoring its three seniors,
Nate Bitner,
Derrick Hayes and
Matt Helle.
"We want to thanks these three seniors on all their hard work and dedication to this program," said head coach
Nick Totta.
Bitner, a Kearney, Missouri native, transferred to William Woods from Moberly Area Community College. After red shirting his first season with the Owls, in his two year campaign, he has saw action in 55 games, recorded 487 points, 233 rebounds, 79 assists. The 2014-15 year he is averaging 9.7 points per game, while shooting 42.5 percent from the field and 37.1 percent from the three point line.
"Bitner, has became an impact player in his two years at the woods and has worked on his game to capitalize on this year statistically," expressed Totta.
Hayes, the Portland, Oregon native, came to William Woods last season, after transferring from Clackamas Community College, while he red-shirted his first season on campus. After battling a early season injury, Hayes has appeared in 18 games on the year, complied 128 points, 76 rebounds and is currently averaging 7.1 points per game.
"In his short time in the Owls uniform, he has dedicated his time to get better and work hard since he has arrived," said Totta
Helle, the Cape Girardeau, Missouri native, is a three-year letter winner and has been with the Owls since the 2011-12 season, however, had his campaign cut short, after sustaining a season-ending injury this year. In his career, Helle has amassed 252 points, 203 rebounds, 32 assists and shot 52.2 percent from the field in 74 games played. In the 2013-14 season, he held the single season field goal percentage (59.5 percent).
"Although, his career was ended shorter than we wanted, Helle has been a key attribute for this program,' said Totta. "He has been a player who has continued to get better every year."
The last time these two teams meet earlier in the season, the Owls dropped a heart breaker in the final minutes to the Pirates, falling 66-65. The AMC showdown was neck to neck all the way down to the wire, as WWU had a chance to steal the win but with a costly turnover and a missed three pointer at the buzzer sealed the one point victory for Park.
Park University is currently 13-10 on the season and 12-7 in AMC standings. The Pirates are on a five game winning streak, as the team has not dropped a game in the month of February. In its last outing, PU escaped a 79-76 victory over Missouri Baptist on Thursday night.
The Pirates have three players averaging in double digits on the year, leading the way is Mylin Jordan, who is posting 18.9 points per game and shooting 46 percent from the field, while Freddie Manyawu adds 12 points per game and Marcus Johnson chips in 11 points.
WWU is set to get some redemption against the Pirates to split the season series and send its three seniors,
Nate Bitner,
Derrick Hayes and
Matt Helle out with its second straight AMC victory.
