Owls Take On (RV) Freed-Hardeman In Its First AMC Test On The Year In St. Louis

Clapp is hitting a team-high .550 (11-for-20) during the Owls seven game winning streak.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The (RV) William Woods University baseball team will look for its eighth win in a row and its first American Midwest Conference (AMC) wins on the year, as the Owls take on (RV) Freed-Hardeman University at Harris-Stowe State. First-pitch of the doubleheader from the neutral site will be thrown at 12 p.m., on Thursday.

The Owls (11-3), won its seventh consecutive game in a row in front of the home crowd on Tuesday, as the team defeated Culver-Stockton College, 4-2. WWU totaled four runs on seven hits, and were led by senior Austin Clapp, going 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.

Larry Price, Jordan Dey and Nick Spagnola also added one hit, while Spagnola led the Owls with two runs scored.

On the mound, Ryan Schmidt picked up the victory, as he worked 2.1 innings in relief action, allowing no run, zero hits and struck out three batters. James Ball, meanwhile, picked up his second save on the season, as he was able to shut down the Wildcats and secure the win for WWU.

During its season-high seven game winning streak, the Owls are batting .311 as a team, and are led by Clapp's .550 average (11-for-20), with six runs scored and six RBI. Alex St. Pierre holds a .471 average (8-for-17), with four runs scored and six RBI, while Dustin Kremer and Cody Stewart are hitting .365 and .357 respectively.

Dey, meanwhile, has brought the power for WWU, as he has totaled four home runs and 10 RBI in seven games.

The Owls have also totaled 42 RBI during the last seven games and have found success on the base paths, as they have stolen 25 bases in 27 attempts.

On the mound, the pitching has been dominant, as they hold a 2.21 ERA and have six different pitchers with a perfect 0.00 ERA. Garrett Haslag is 2-0 in his last three starts, as he has totaled 11.2 innings of work, allowing two runs (zero earned) on five hits and struck out 11 batters.

Schmidt, Ryan Yuengel, Dustin Kremer, Dylan Hastings and John Cavness have also earned one win during the winning streak. Yuengel has been nearly unhittable in his 5.0 innings of work, as he has totaled 11 strikeouts, while Cavness has a K/BB ratio of 11/1 in 6.1 innings.

On the season, WWU is batting .293 as a team, while totaling 78 runs scored, 17 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 71 RBI. St. Pierre is off to an impressive start at the dish, as the Charleston, South Carolina, native, holds at team-high .433 average and has contributed 10 RBI.

Clapp, is hitting just shy of .400 (.395 avg), with nine runs scored and leads the team with four doubles, while Cody Stewart has hit his way to a .323 average and has also contributed eight RBI. Five of the teams' home runs have come off the bat of Dey, which has allowed him to total a team-high 17 RBI to go along with his .289 average.

The pitching has been just as good for WWU this year, as they have team ERA of 1.95 in 106.0 innings pitched. Haslag, Yuengel, Schmidt and Hastings are each 2-0 on the year and each hurler has an ERA under 1.30 and have combined for 46 strikeouts.

Freed-Hardeman (11-3), is on a four game winning streak of its own and have won eight out of its last nine games on the diamond.

All four of its wins came against Culver-Stockton College, as the Lions outscored the Wildcats 31-6 in the series, including collecting two shutouts.

On the season, FHU is batting .321 as a team and are led by Argenis Salazar's .435 average (20-for-46), with four runs scored, five doubles, one triple, three home runs and team-high 23 RBI. Zac Carter is hitting .396 (19-for-48), with 13 runs scored and 12 RBI, while Houston Looser (.385 avg) and Chase Young (.383 avg) are both batting over .380 on the year and have combined for 30 runs scored.

Other notable hitters the Owls pitching staff will need to keep an eye on include Nathan Van Nortwick (.353 avg), Pete Trollinger (.341 avg) and Garrett Ferguson (.308 avg).

On the mound, the Lions have a team ERA of 4.14 and have totaled 71 strikeouts on the year. Leading the staff has been Jack Coleman with a 3-0 record to go along with a 2.45 ERA in 22.0 innings pitched.

Brandon Guske is also off to a strong start, owning a 4-1 record and a 2.89 ERA in 28.0 innings pitched, while leading the team in strikeouts (18) and holding opposing hitters to a .231 average. Nolan Huber is the third starter with an ERA under 3.00 (2.95), as he is 2-0 on the year and has struck out 15 batters.
