Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The (RV) William Woods University baseball team started off American Midwest Conference (AMC) play on the right foot on Thursday afternoon, as the team swept the doubleheader action against (RV) Freed-Hardeman University, winning game one 5-2 and game two 3-2.
(RV) William Woods 5 (RV) Freed-Hardeman University 2In game one, junior hurler
John Cavness picked up his second win on the season for William Woods (13-3; 2-0 AMC), as he went 6.1 innings, allowing two runs and striking out five.
Â
Senior
James Ball, meanwhile, earned his second consecutive save in as many days, as he was able to escape a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning and secure the win for the Owls.
Â
At the plate,
Jordan Dey continued his hot start to the season, as the Sedalia, Missouri, native, smashed a two-run homer for the Owls, which is his team leading sixth on the year. Senior
Cody Stewart also picked up a hit for WWU and totaled two RBI as well.
Â
(RV) William Woods 3 (RV) Freed-Hardeman University 2In game two, it was the bullpen leading the Owls to a win, as the trio of
Caleb Bounds,
Dylan Hastings and
Ryan Yuengel, combined for 6.1 innings of work, allowing one hit, one walk, zero runs and struck out seven batters.
Â
Offensively, the Owls grabbed the lead in the seventh inning, as
Dustin Kremer pinch-hit with the bases loaded. The Wardsville, Missouri, native, hit a ground ball, but the Lions defense committed a two-base error, which plated the go ahead runs for WWU.
Â
From there, FHU could get nothing going against the Owls relievers, as Bounds was the first to display a strong showing out of the bullpen, as he hurled 3.0 scoreless innings. Then, Hastings followed in the sixth and the Vista, California, native, earned his third win on the year, going 1.1 innings and striking out two Lions.
Â
To close out the game, Yuengel, collected his second save on the year and continued his dominance out of the pen, working a scoreless eighth and ninth innings, while allowing one hit and striking out three to shut down FHU and give the Owls a one run win.
Â
With the two victories, William Woods has now won a season-high nine straight games and will look to extend its winning streak against Lyon College in a three game series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. and will play the third game on Monday at 2 p.m.
