Baseball Travels To (RV) Missouri Baptist University For Its Final AMC Regular Season Series

Spagnola leads the team with a .390 batting average
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -  The No. 25 ranked William Woods University baseball team heads on the road for its last American Midwest Conference regular season series against the (RV) Missouri Baptist University. The three game series is set for a doubleheader on Friday, starting at 1:30 p.m., with the finale beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

The Owls (33-9; 17-6 AMC),  enters  the final weekend of play in second place in the AMC, but they are just half a game back from current leader Freed-Hardeman University and only one game ahead of the Spartans, as the top of the conference is in a battle for the 2015 AMC regular season title. WWU will need to sweep all three games against MBU and will need help from Hannibal-LaGrange University as they are set to play the leading Lions.

However, William Woods will have to take care of its own business in hopes to bring home the regular season title, as they do not have it easy this weekend against the Spartans.

WWU is currently on an eight game win streak and will need to use that momentum heading into this weekend against the Spartans who have won its last two games.

The Owls offense, which has been a key impact in the win streak, as the team has outscored its opponents 46-25, while batting .339 as a team in the last eight games. The outburst from the plate has helped the team post the third highest batting average in the conference with their .312 mark from the plate, which is also tied with Missouri Baptist.

Nick Spagnola, a Algonquin, Illinois native, who has had a stellar year, comes into this weekend leading the Owls with a .390 batting average, 62 hits and 18 stolen bases. The senior, has helped the red-hot offense as of late, going 17-for-33 (.515) from the plate with five stolen bases in the past eight games.

Cody Stewart, who has also been a threat at the dish for the Owls, is riding on a career-high eleven straight game posting a hit. The Temecula, California native, has pushed his season average up to .370, while leading the team with three triples and 42 RBI's on the season. In the Owls eight game win streak, Stewart has recorded four doubles, 13 RBI's and four stolen bases.

Pitching which will be key this weekend for the Owls have been just as successful as its offense. The Owls will send out a trio of starters that are a combined with 6-3 record, a 3.50 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 113.5 innings pitched this season. As a staff, WWU posts the lowest team ERA in the AMC with its 2.28 ERA, which is also in the second in the nation.

The Owls bullpen has been key in relief, as closer James Ball is fourth in the AMC with a 2.09 ERA, as he leads the pitching staff with 67 strikeouts in 60.1 innings pitched.
The Spartans are currently 34-8 on the season and 16-7 in AMC play, as MBU is coming off a 18-6 win in dominating fashion over Missouri Valley College earlier this week, after dropping the three game series 1-2 against the AMC standing leader, Freed-Hardeman University last weekend.

Statistically, both teams match-up well, as MBU is hitting .312 as a team, while Orlando Olvera leads the way with a .410 batting average, totaling a team-high 66 hits and 51 RBI's on the season.

On the mound, David Mullens enters the weekend with a 5-3 record, earning a ERA of 3.15 in 60.0 innings of work, while he leads the staff with 54 strikeouts on the season.
