FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University Men's Basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, March 2nd when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri to face Missouri Baptist University in the American Midwest Conference Quarterfinals. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Owls (18-12, 14-8 AMC), earned the fifth seed in the conference tournament and are coming off an 89-64, loss to No. 12 Columbia College on Saturday. WWU shot 37 percent from the field for the contest and were led by
Trey Mitchell's 19 points. The Owls struggled shooting the ball from the outside in the contest as they shot 2-for-15 from behind the arc in the contest.
William Woods trailed by 12, 48-36, at halftime before Columbia pulled away in the second half of the contest. The Cougars outscored the Owls, 41-28, in the second half. William Woods shooting cooled off a bit in the second half as they shot 34 percent in the half including going 0-for-4 from behind the arc.
On the season, the Owls are averaging 82.4 points per game, the third most points in the conference. William Woods is hitting 38.1 percent of their three pointers on the season, which is the second highest percentage in the AMC.
Kevin House leads the offensive attack for the Owls as he is averaging 14.2 points per game on the season. House is shooting 50 percent from the floor on the season. Not only does House lead the Owls in points, he is also the team leader in assists as he has 152 on the season.
Following House is
Deon Pettigrew who is averaging 13.4 points per game. Pettigrew also is collected 5.9 rebounds per game.
Trey Mitchell,
DJ Johnson and
Austin Lowery round out the double figure scores for William Woods. Mitchell, is averaging 11.9 points per game. Johnson is scoring 11.6 points per game while Lowery is scoring 11.1 points per game.
Missouri Baptist is coming into the match-up with a 19-11 overall record and own a 14-8 AMC record on the year. The Spartans defeated Freed-Hardeman University on Saturday to edge William Woods for the fourth spot in the AMC Conference Tournament.
Against Freed-Hardeman, Missouri Baptist shot 48 percent from the field to overcome a halftime deficit to win 87-82. The Spartans had five players score in double-figures in the victory and wre led by a pair of teammates scoring 19 points apiece.
On the season, the Spartans are averaging 80.0 points per game and are led in scoring by Jared White, who is averaging 15.2 points per game. MBU is shooting 48 percent from the floor on the season.
In the last meeting between these two schools, Missouri Baptist came away with a two point victory, 88-86, over William Woods. Spartans guard Chris Buzzell drained a three-pointer with no time left on the clock, as Missouri Baptist would claim the win. The Owls, which shot 53 percent in the first half, cooled off in the second half shooting 37 percent in the second half.
