Box Score FULTON, Mo. – For the second straight day, the William Woods University women's tennis team knocked off an NCAA Division II tennis program. On Tuesday afternoon, the Owls defeated Maryville University, 6-3, at Suzanne Neal Memorial Tennis Complex on the campus of William Woods University.
"The girls played very well today," stated head coach
Lauren Meier. "Maryville is a tough team. The Girls proved a lot today. I am very pleased with their performance. They earned this win today."
With the win the Owls have won six straight matches.
Like yesterday, the Owls took two of three doubles matches. WWU took the first point of the match when third doubles team of
Alba Salinas and
Felicia Cesar won 8-0. The lead was extended to 2-0 after
Julia Mulder and
Paige Smith won, 8-5, in no. two doubles. The Owls battled in no. 1 doubles with the team of
Chelsea Steward and
Karyna Sagalai but they were defeated 8-6.
Heading into singles the Owls led 2-1.
Mulder helped extend WWU lead to 3-1 as she won no. 6 singles in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Steward continued to help extend the lead to 4-1 after won in no. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
William Woods also took no. 4 singles with Salinas (6-4, 6-4) and no. 3 singles with Cesar, who won by a score of 6-4, 6-2.
Maryville won no. 1 singles as Smith was defeated 6-1, 6-0. Sagalai battled in no. 2 singles as she lost the first set, 7-5. She responded and won set two, 6-0 and lost in the third set, 7-5.
The Owls return to action on Monday, March 28th when they travel to Lebanon, Tenn. to face Cumberland University (Tenn.). The match starts at 10 a.m.
