Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – The No. 19 William Woods University Women's Tennis Team won its seventh-straight when they defeated No. 14 Cumberland, 5-4, on Monday afternoon.
The Owls feel behind early in the women's match against Cumberland as Angelica Sepulveda and Tarsha de Souza won No. 1 doubles against
Chelsea Steward and
Karyna Sagalai, 8-0. The Owls answered back taking No. 2 doubles, 8-6, as
Alba Salinas and
Felicia Cesar defeated Trinidad Aguirre and Jasmine Shankar. The Phoenix took the lead, 2-1, after taking No. 3 doubles, Franki Jecker and Sarah Edwards defeated
Julia Mulder and
Paige Smith, 8-5.
Cumberland extended its lead to 3-1 after winning in No. 1 singles. Sepulveda defeated
Abigail Lemberger, 6-2, 6-0. William Woods came back tying the set after taking the next singles matches.
Alba Salinas defeated Aguirre, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 3 singles.
Chelsea Steward won No. 5 singles over Franki Jecker, 6-1, 6-1.
With the match tied at 3-3, the Owls took the lead after taking No. 2 singles.
Karyna Sagalai defeated Tarsha de Souza, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. The Phoenix came back tying the match at 4-4 after Cumberland's Jasmine Shankar defeated
Felicia Cesar, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
WWU and Cumberland's match came down to No. 6 singles, where
Julia Mulder and Sarah Edwards squared off. Mulder clinched the victory for the Owls with a 6-3, 6-2, win over Edwards. The win for the Owls improved its winning streak to seventh-straight matches.
The Owls return on Tuesday, March 29th when they travel to Cochran, Ga. to face Middle Georgia State.
