No. 18 Owls Knock Off No. 7 Middle Georgia State

Box Score COCHRAN, Ga. – For the seconds straight day, the William Woods University Women's Tennis team defeated a ranked opponent. On Tuesday afternoon, the Owls defeated No. 7 Middle Georgia State, 5-4.
 
"I am extremely proud of the girls today," Head Coach Lauren Meier stated. "Every match was a battle! My assistant did an incredible job coaching Alba to a victory to tie the score at 4-4. The team really came together and it really helped pull out the victory."
 
The win for the Owls was its eighth straight victory. WWU is 5-1 on the road this season.
 
The Owls feel behind early as they dropped the first two doubles matches of the day. Preeti Gokhale and Nathalie Wenko defeated Abigail Lemberger and Chelsea Steward, 8-5, in No. 1 doubles. The next doubles match went to the Knights was No. 2 doubles when Anastasiia Vasileva and Lara Persiani defeated Alba Salinas and Felicia Cesar, 8-6.
 
William Woods took its first point of the day in No. 3 doubles when Julia Mulder and Paige Smith defeated Shelby Ashley and Yannick Garcia, in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-4).
 
The Knights extended its lead over the Owls to 4-1 early in singles action. Vasileva took No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2, over Lemberger. Persiani then defeated Karyna Sagalai, 6-4,6-3, in No. 2 singles.
 
After falling behind 4-1, William Woods started making his comeback. Chelsea Steward won in No. 5 singles as she defeated Yannick Garcia, 6-1, 6-2. Cesar came back winning No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 4-4 before Preeti Gokhale retired.
 
Trailing 4-3, Alba Salinas dropped set one, 6-2, to Nathalie Wenko. Salinas battled back taking set two, 6-3, forcing a third set. Salinas took set three, 6-4, tying the match at 4-4.
 
With the match tied at 4-4, Julia Mulder took set one, 6-2, in No. 6 singles over Jacqueline Heer. Heer battled back set two, 6-2, over Mulder. In the third and final set Mulder defeated Heer, 6-0, taking the match and giving WWU its eighth straight victory.
 
The Owls return to action on Thursday, March 31st when they travel to Brunswick, Ga. to face College of Coastal Georgia.
