Owls Baseball Host Avila on Wednesday

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University Baseball team closes out its 2016 home slate on Wednesday, April 13th when they host Avila University in non-conference contest. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. in the single nine inning contest.
 
The Owls (22-16, 9-9 AMC) are coming off a three game sweep of American Midwest Conference opponent, Lindenwood University-Belleville over the weekend. The Owls have won is last four contests. In the last game for the Owls against the Lynx, Ryan Phillips threw a complete game and struck out a season-high 15 batters in the contest. He only allowed one run and the Owls won, 5-1.  

On the season the Owls are batting .301, collecting 343 hits, with 87 extra base hits. WWU has scored 245 runs this season. Ryan Phillips leads the team with a .455 (40-for-88) batting average on the season. Jordan Dey and Tanner Wetrich following as they are hitting .358 and .345 on the season. Phillips and Dey lead the team with 36 RBIs.
 
On the mound, the Owls Jacob Guilianelli leads the team with a 2.55 ERA in 35.1 innings this season. He has appeared in eight games making seven starts. Caleb Bounds follows with an ERA of 3.58. Ryan Philips and John Cavness, each of started ten games this season hold ERA's of 3.84 and 4.77 on the season. Both have a complete game shutout on the season. Cavness leads the team with six wins on the year and Phillips follows with five wins.
 
As a pitching staff, the Owls have a team ERA of 5.44 and are holding opponents to a batting average of .282 on the season.
 
The Eagles of Avila University enter this non-conference game with a record of 23-17, prior to playing Tuesday against Graceland.
 
On the season, Kyle Simmons leads the team with a batting average of .411 (58-for-141) on the season. Randy Keen follows with an average of .410 (48-for-117). Keen has 19 doubles and eight home runs on the season. Keen finds himself ranked no. 6 in the NAIA in doubles on the season.
 
On the mound, the Eagles are led by reliever Chase Cunningham. Cunningham has appeared in 12 games for Avila this year and holds an ERA of 2.63. He leads the team in saves with five. Following is Erick Mojica with an ERA of 3.63. Keen follows with a 5-5 record and an ERA of 4.39. EJ Merlo leads the team with 60.2 innings pitched on the season. Gunnar Friend leads the team with seven wins.  
 
As a team, the Eagles have an ERA of 5.61 and are allowing opponents to hit .300 against them. They have allowed 94 extra base hits on the season including, 20 home runs. They have struck out 211 batters on the season.

Earlier this season the Owls and Eagles squared off at Avila. Avila came away with a 6-5 victory over William woods. Ryan Phillips and Drew May led the way for the Owls with three hits.
