Box Score OLATHE, Kan. – The William Woods University women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the NAIA Association of Independent Institutions Conference Tournament. The Owls defeated eighth seed Stephens College, 5-0, on Friday.
The Owls jumped on the Stars of Stephens College in doubles action. The Owls No. 3 doubles team of
Alba Salinas and
Felicia Cesar won 8-0 over Aleesa Wolf and Rachel Mecklenburg. The Owls No. 1 doubles team of
Paige Smith and
Karyna Sagalai claimed the second point for the Owls on the day by winning 8-1 over Courtney Huels and Jada Kyle. WWU came out ahead 3-0 in doubles as
Julia Mulder and
Chelsea Steward defeated Hannah Dorey and Gracie Strawn, 8-2.
After taking all three doubles matches to start the match, the Owls only needed to win two singles matches to clinch the match and move on to the semifinals.
Julia Mulder recorded the fourth point for the Owls as she defeated Mecklenburg in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, in No. 6 singles.
Alba Salinas clinched the match for WWU in No. 4 singles action. Salinas defeated Strawn, 6-0, 6-1, to move the Owls into the semifinals.
The Owls led in No. 1 singles, No. 3 singles and No. five singles but the matches were not finished.
The win for William Woods was its fifth in a row and improved the Owls to 15-2 on the season.
The Owls will face the winner of fourth seed Baker University or fifth seed Missouri Baptist tomorrow in the semifinals at 11 a.m. at the college Boulevard Activities Center in Olathe, Kansas.
