FULTON, Mo. – The RV William Woods University women's basketball clinched an American Midwest Conference Tournament berth Thursday night as they upset No. 17 Lyon, 55-47. This is the third time in program history they Owls have beat the Scotts.
Kaycee Gerald led the way with 11 points.
Ashleigh Frampton chipped in 9 points and grabbed a team high 10 rebounds.
Sommer Burgard chipped in 9 points as well.
WWU will recognize their four seniors on Saturday, Feb. 16 as they host Central Baptist. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
Game Flow
William Woods was the first to put points on the board. A three-point basket from
Bailey Rollins gave the Owls a 3-0 lead. Seconds later, Liz Henderson responded to the WWU three by knocking down a three-pointer of her own and tying the game.
Shortly after tying the game, Katie Turner pushed the Scots ahead on her two point basket in the paint giving LC a 5-3 lead. WWU quickly regained the lead when Frampton hit a wide open three and put them back up 6-5.
But Lyon responded once again to a WWU three-pointer when Madison Riley hit the Scots second three-point basket of the game and gained a 8-6 lead.
Frampton would score again for the Owls and tie the game at 8.
Things started to slow down late in the first period for both teams as they were tied 10-10 going into the second.
At the start of the second period, Lyon was able to get out to a 15-13 lead, but a Lexy Gallaway three-pointer would push William Woods back ahead 16-15.
After back and forth scoring, Riley knocked down another three-pointer and gave the Scots a 22-18 cushion going into halftime.
To start the second half, WWU was able to tie the game 22-22 on two Frampton free throws.
Ali Tucker eventually pushed the Scots back ahead 2 but
Kasey Hazell tied the game 24-24 on a nice midrange jump shot.
Three minutes would run off the clock before either team scored again. With 3:33 remaining in the third period, Burgard made a nice move to the basket and pushed the Owls ahead 28-26. She went on the score again seconds later to push the lead to 29-26.
Lyon's Riley knocked down a two-point basket to put them within 1 of the Owls, but it was not enough to slow down Burgard as she was able to connect on another basket in the paint giving WWU a three-point lead.
With momentum picking up for the Owls,
Tori Nesslage and
Rylie Cox hit clutch free throws to give William Woods a 34-31 third quarter lead.
Early in the fourth period, WWU was able to get a 41-36 lead over the Scots.
Two back-to-back baskets from Tucker quickly put Lyon within one of the Owls. A Hazell midrange jumper pushed WWU back up 43-40 with five minutes remaining in regulation.
Lyon continued to fight but could not regain the lead. William Woods only allowed the Scots to get within one before taking off and out scoring Lyon 8-2 in the final minutes of the game.
Two Gerald free throws solidified the game and William Woods walked away with a 55-47 upset.
