Box Score 2 STERLING, Kan. – The William Woods University baseball team split with Sterling College (Kan.) Saturday afternoon. Sterling defeated the Owls in game one, 7-6, but the Owls bounced back and defeated Sterling 11-3 in game two.
With their first win of the season, the Owls move to a 1-4-1 record.
The play York College (Neb.) in a doubleheader series on Sunday, Feb. 10, starting at noon. The series will be played at Central Christian College in McPherson, Kan.
Game One
The Owls scored four in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead over Sterling, but Sterling answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Owls scored one in the third on a
Marquise Doherty sacrifice fly to bring
Quincy Jones home, bringing the score to 6-5, Sterling.
In the top of the seventh, the Owls added one more to tie the game at 6-6 with a
Chase Gibson RBI single to bring home
Trevor Garriott. The Owls left two stranded in scoring position though as the next two outs came.
In the bottom of the seventh, Sterling scored the final run needed to end the game with a one out, RBI single.
Game Two
As the second batter of game two, Garriott smashed a homerun to give the Owls a 1-0 early lead. Garriott continued his success in the second inning as he hit a two RBI single to give the Owls a 3-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Owls brought home seven to take a 10-0 lead.
Leading off the bottom of the fourth, Sterling's Velazquez knocked a homerun to get the Knights on the board.
The Owls scored their final run in the fifth inning.
Sterling added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Owls closed out the game with a strikeout for their first win.
