Box Score 2 FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University baseball team split with College of the Ozarks (Mo.) Friday afternoon. The Owls began the day with a dominating 12-1 game one win, but followed with a 5-3 loss.
The Owls are now 18-28-1 on the season.
The Owls host COTO for a second doubleheader on Saturday, April 20, beginning at 12 p.m.
Game One
The Owls struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. On two outs,
Quincy Jones singled.
Marquise Doherty followed with a single just over second base, moving Jones to second.
Russell Strilchuk started his 3-for-4 day with a single to left field, scoring Jones.
Tyler Bracht grabbed the Owls' fifth hit of the inning with an RBI single to score Doherty.
In the bottom of the third, Doherty hit a one-out double to the right-center field fence. Strilchuk followed with an RBI single to shallow right-center, bringing home Doherty. With two outs and two on,
Chase Gibson hit a two RBI single to center field to score Strilchuk and Bracht and give the Owls a 5-0 lead.
The Owls racked up seven runs in the sixth inning to take a 12-0 lead. With bases loaded,
Isaiah Gibbs hit his fourth triple of the season to score
Brian Granton,
Alex Wimer and
Jordan Smith.
Zach Smith followed with a single to bring home Gibbs and give the Owls a 9-0 lead. With two outs and one on, Strilchuk hit a two-run home run just to the left of the right field fence post. Chract hit a double, Granton brought him home to give the Owls the 12-0 lead.
COTO scored their one and only run of the game with a two-out single.
Taran Oulton (4-7) pitched the complete game win. He had a shutout going until the top of the seventh. He struck out four and allowed just five hits.
The Owls out-hit COTO 18-5. All nine batters in the lineup grabbed at least one hit in the game. Strilchuk went 3-for-4 from the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Bracht went 3-for-4 with two runs, and Gibbs went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Game Two
COTO scored two in the first two innings on sacrifice fly outs to take a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second.
In the bottom of the second, Doherty led off with a double to the left-center field fence. A Strilchuk ground out moved Doherty to third, and a passed ball allowed Doherty to score.
The Owls tied it up in the bottom of the third. Z. Smith hit a two-out triple to deep right field and was brought home on Jones' RBI single to shallow left field.
In the top of the fourth, the Owls committed three errors to aid in COTO's 4-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth, COTO added their fifth run.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Owls looked to grab the win.
Jordan Smith led off with a single, followed by a
Connor Poulson single down the right field line. Z. Smith then singled down the right field line, giving J. Smith enough time to come home on the throw. The Owls loaded up the bases with just one out, but two ground outs followed to end the Owls' chance at a comeback.
Despite the loss, the Owls still out-hit COTO, 11-10. Z. Smith and J. Smith each went 2-for-3 from the plate with one run scored. Jones also recorded two hits.
Adam Grunden (1-4) is credited with the loss. He pitched 4.1 innings and struck out three.
Jeremy Hidalgo came in as relief, allowed just one hit and struck out three.
