Box Score 2 FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University baseball team swept College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in their second doubleheader in as many days. The Owls grabbed a game one 7-2 win and a game two 5-2 win to win the series 3-1.
The Owls are now 20-28-1 on the season.
They close out their season with a three-game conference series versus Williams Baptist University starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 26. The Owls will honor the seniors in between the two games on Saturday, April 27. The doubleheader begins at 12 p.m.
Game One
COTO took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Owls were unable to find home until the fourth inning.
Quincy Jones led off the inning with a single down the right field line, and
Tyler Bracht followed with a single to left-center field. A double play took Bracht and
Russell Strilchuk out, but Jones moved to third. On a wild throw, Jones crossed home plate for the Owls' first run.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Owls took a 4-2 lead. Jones doubled deep left center field to score
Marquise Doherty. Bracht followed with a single to center field to score Jones, and Strilchuk doubled to bring home Bracht. COTO intentionally walked
Chase Gibson, but a fly out ended the inning with two stranded.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Owls loaded up the bases with one out. Jones hit a pop up that fell on the grass to score
Brian Granton. On the next at-bat, Bracht was hit by the pitch, bringing in the Owls' sixth run. Strilchuk was walked next, bringing in Doherty for a free run. COTO grabbed the last two outs needed to get out of the inning with the Owls leading 7-2.
The Owls' defense forced three up, three down in the top of the seventh to close out the win.
Jones went 3-for-4 from the plate with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Bracht went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
Travis Hennessey (4-3) pitched the complete game win. He tossed 7.0 innings, struck out six and allowed six hits.
Game Two
COTO struck first again, scoring two in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead over the Owls.
Strilchuk led off the bottom of the second with his fifth home run of the season, a 380-foot bomb over the right-center field fence. The Owls then tied up the game with a misplayed grounder that brought Bracht home.
Tim Redford led off the fifth with a double to deep left field. He moved to third on
Jordan Smith's bunt, and with the catcher's overthrow to first, Redford scored to take a 3-2 lead. Gibbs next doubled to deep left-center field to bring home J. Smith, and Jones brought home Gibbs on his RBI single to right field. After intentionally walking Strilchuk, COTO grabbed the final out of the inning with the Owls leading 5-2.
The Owls' defense held COTO to just seven batters in the next two innings to complete the sweep.
Bracht went 2-for-3 from the plate with a double and one run scored. Gibbs and Redford also recorded a double.
Davin Marcomb (2-3) grabbed the win on the mound. He came in as relief, pitched 2.1 innings, allowed no hits and struck out two.
Tristan Steffens pitched the first 4.2 innings and struck out four.
