Baseball Opens Season with Win, Second Game Suspended

Box Score BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – The William Woods University baseball team opened the 2020 campaign with a 4-2 win over Blue Mountain College. 
 
The second game of the doubleheader was suspended in the top of the sixth due to darkness. With a 2-2 score, the Owls and BMC will resume play at 10:30 a.m. CT. The Owls will then play their second doubleheader following.
 

Game One: William Woods def. Blue Mountain, 4-2
The Owls sat with bases loaded and one out in the top of the second, but BMC caught two fly outs to end the inning with no runs scored.
 
After a quick three outs in the field, the Owls went back to work at the plate. Jordan Smith led off with a single, and Connor Poulson reached on a walk. With two runners on and one out, Alex Owens doubled to bring in Smith and move Poulson to third. On Trevor Garriott's single, Poulson was tagged out at home, but Owens and Garriott were able to move to third and second. Easton Wallace then singled to left field, scoring Owens and moving Garriott to third. Tyklen Salmons followed with a single to right field, bringing home Garriott and Wallace to put the Owls up 4-0. BMC made a pitching change, and the Owls' next batter grounded out to end the inning.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, BMC looked to close the scoring gap. Following an error, BMC took advantage and scored on a single. They added a second run on a single, but the Owls' defense left two on base as they grabbed the final out of the inning on a flyout. 
 
After the first two batters were hit in the bottom of the seventh, BMC bunted and reached to load the bases. Davin Marcomb came in to pitch for the Owls and struck the next three batters out to end the game with a 4-2 win. 
 
Logan Bexton (1-0) earned the win after starting on the mound and pitching 5.0 innings. He struck out three and allowed six hits and two runs. 
 
Marcomb (1) earned the save after striking out the final three batters.
 
Wallace went 2-for-2 from the plate with a run scored and one RBI. Smith went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
 

Game Two: William Woods vs. Blue Mountain, 2-2 (Top 6)
BMC got on the board first in game two with an RBI single in the bottom of the second.
 
WWU countered with an RBI single from Smith to score Brady Owen in the top of the third, evening the score at 1-1. The Owls then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth with a Jake Fleming RBI ground out to score Owens.
 
BMC evened the score in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double. 
 
Heading into the sixth inning, the game was suspended due to darkness. The two teams will pick up right where they left off Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m.
 
 Tristan Steffens is currently on the mound. He has thrown nine strikeouts in the five innings played.
