Box Score ST. LOUIS - (RV) William Woods University (8-2, 2-1 American Midwest Conference) has seemingly enjoyed playing at the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis (5-4, 0-3), scoring in triple digits for a second straight meeting between the teams as the Owls'
Jack Wetzel scored a career-high 28 points (7-13 3-pointers and 3-4 field goals) off the bench in their 101-43 victory over the Eutectics Thursday at UHSP Gymnasium.
"We came out with good energy tonight and kept it at that level the majority of the game," William Woods men's basketball coach
Jordan Ashton said. "After our last game where we felt we took some steps backwards in certain areas, we've been really challenging our guys, and they've responded well. Now, we need to build off it and keep it going."
Not often are teams as dominant as WWU has been versus UHSP in recent matchups. The Owls have outscored the Eutectics 213-92 in the last two games between the teams, both in St. Louis - those are the only instances of Woods reaching triple digits in points against UHSP.
Surpassing their season-high points in a game tally by 17 points, the Owls also had five players, three starters and two bench players, who scored in double figures, which was their most this season. While Wetzel recorded the game-high in points for WWU,
Henry Shannon III notched the most points among the starters between the two teams, with 14 points (6-6 free throws), and he added eight rebounds (four offensive) and three steals (co-game-high).Â
One may have already thought those performances were impressive, but that's without getting into Francis Okwousah's second straight double-double for the Owls, fourth on the season, as the reigning AMC Newcomer of the Year posted 12 points and a game-high 11 boards (six offensive). Rounding out The Woods' double-digit scorers were
Ty'Shon Pannell with 11 points (3-4 3-pointers), three assists and two rebounds off the bench and starter
D'Mari Wiltz going a perfect 4-4 from the field and 2-2 from the charity stripe to give him 10 points - he added seven boards (two offensive), seven assists (his most as an Owl) and three steals (co-game-high).
Focusing on the game, William Woods took its first double-digit lead 6:20 into the contest when Pannell knocked down a 3-pointer to put it at 15-5 - four Owls scored during that run.
Tre Titus, who assisted Pannell's triple, provided a second straight WWU basket as Shannon hit a layup to increase the Owls' advantage to 17-5 with 13:00 left in the first half. For the next 5:39, Woods outscored UHSP 13-5 to make it 30-10 Owls; to get the 20-point lead, Shannon pulled down a defensive board before Okwuosah made a layup assisted by Wiltz.Â
Shannon got it done on both ends to further William Woods' lead to 30 points with 4:40 to go in the first half. To do that, Shannon collected a defensive board before getting fouled in transition and going 2-2 from the free-throw line to send the Owls up 41-11. The Woods kept building onto its lead, holding a 53-17 lead at halftime after Wetzel drained a 3-pointer provided by Wiltz off a
Nathaniel Owen steal.
It did take William Woods a bit longer to elevate its lead to 40 points. It got there when Titus landed a shot from beyond the arc, assisted by Wiltz off his offensive rebound, to put it at 66-24 Owls with 13:39 remaining in the contest. Wetzel's fifth 3-pointer coincidentally gave WWU a 50-point cushion (85-35) with 7:57 on the clock. The last scoring milestone was the Owls getting to 100 points, and that came when Avila University transfer
Cooper Smith converted two free throws with 1:06 left to finish his four-point performance in his first game as an Owl after he blocked a shot on the defensive end.
The Owls posted 54 rebounds (20 offensive) with 22 second-chance points, scored 19 points off 13 forced turnovers and were 33-67 (49.3 percent) from the field, 16-36 (44.4 percent) from 3-point range and 19-24 (79.2 percent) from the free-throw line. The Eutectics recorded 22 rebounds (11 offensive) with 10 second-chance points, tallied three points off 12 forced turnovers and converted 14-55 (25.5 percent) field goals, 5-25 (20 percent) 3-pointers and 10-18 (55.6 percent) free throws.
William Woods hopes to carry over its tremendous showing when it hosts AMC foe Harris-Stowe State University (4-7, 1-2 AMC) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Anderson Arena in Fulton. The Owls swept the season series with the Hornets last season, winning the most recent meeting 70-55 on Feb. 13 in Fulton.
