Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Mo. - Peyton Clampitt turned in a gem of a performance on the mound Friday, striking out nine and allowing just two walks in a complete-game shutout as William Woods (12-13-1, 1-1 AMC) earned a split against Central Baptist College (16-7, 1-1 AMC) with a 1-0 game two win answering a 7-1 loss in game one.
Woods struggled to find a rhythm at the plate in the series opener, but still managed to scratch across a run in the bottom of the second.
Kaden Kinsler and
Jacob McWhirter earned back-to-back walks, with a well-executed sac bunt by
Taylor Hopkins putting the runners in scoring position.
Sean Goings ripped a shot up the middle, but CBC's Gram Middleton was able to get just enough of a glove on it during his followthrough to deflect the ball into the path of second baseman Ryan Dauphinee. Kinsler was able to cross the plate, but McWhirter was forced to hold up at third.
Dauphinee answered for CBC in the top of the third, hitting a one-out double and moving to third on a bunt single by Ian Velazquez. A sac fly to right by Austin Teal tied the game at 1-1, but Woods managed to get out of the inning without any more damage.
The Mustangs scratched a run across in the top of the fifth to open up a 2-1 lead, then found five runs in the top of the seventh before WWU could stop the bleeding.
Despite the six-run deficit, the Owls valiantly battled back in the bottom of the seventh, with McWhirter earning a leadoff walk and Hopkins following with a HBP. Goings moved the runners up 90 feet with a grounder to second, then
Jack Niggemeier drew a two-out walk to load the bases and chase starter Gram Middleton from the game.
Unfortunately, Jackson Pope was able to retire
Tyler Horton on a fly ball to right and end the Woods threat.
McWhirter opened the scoring for Woods in game two, leading off with a single and moving to second on a Hopkins sac bunt.
Cade Irwin knocked in McWhirter with a single up the middle, but
Colby Caton hit into a double play to bring the second to a close.
The Owls held on in the top of the third, with Clampitt getting himself out of trouble by picking off Velazquez after allowing a one-out single.
Clampitt cruised through the fourth and fifth innings and shrugged off a brief hiccup in the sixth, stranding CBC runners at the corners with a strike out and easy fly out to right.
As he crossed the century mark in the eighth inning, Clampitt managed to hold on to the shutout despite giving up a leadoff walk and a one-out single. After leaving Cade McBride staring at strike three to end the inning, the Woods starter made it clear that he wanted to go the distance as he strode confidently to the dugout.
Even after allowing a leadoff walk, the junior transfer settled in and let his defense do the work, drawing three straight flyouts to earn the complete game win.
The teams will wrap up the series tomorrow at Owls Field with a noon first pitch. Prior to the game, William Woods will honor the memory of fall 2023 commit Caleb Easterling with a ceremonial first pitch.
