LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - Landon Dunlap wasted little time in punching the first NAIA Outdoor National Championship ticket for William Woods in the USM Distance Carnival on Friday night.
"It was a great opener for our small group at the Spire Distance Carnival," said head coach
Dan Schwab. "Landon qualified for nationals with a new WWU record time in the 1500, and
Ethan Wilson grabbed a top five time with his PR in the 800 meters.
Mekayla Gibson also had a strong showing, crushing the WWU record in the 5,000 meters."
Wilson opened up the event with a strong performance for Woods, keeping pace with USM's Luis Perez through the opening lap and holding off a second-lap charge from Benedictine's Daniel Rogge.
Dunlap was part of a hotly-contested third heat in the 1,500 meters, with just 1.73 seconds separating first through fifth. In addition to hitting the NAIA 'B' standard, Dunlap knocked nearly two seconds off of his previous PR.
On the women's side, Gibson and
Hailey Gerard both turned in exceptional performances in the first meet of the season, with Gerard trimming nearly a full minute off of her previous personal best. For Gibson, whose previous best sat just outside the top five marks for WWU in the 5,000 meters, her time of 17:55.45 broke an eight-year-old record of 18:14.75.
The Owls continue the outdoor season on Saturday at the CMU Open.
