Box Score FULTON, Mo.- William Woods University (16-15-, 4-3 AMC) exploded for 19 runs in game one of their series against University Health Sciences and Pharmacy (7-16, 1-6 AMC). Jacob McWhirter had a career day for the Owls having three hits with a home run and a double. The Owls took game one 19-5 in seven innings.
UHSP scratched the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the top of the second off the Owls Ace, Max Benton. The Euts left fielder, Logan Stribling, laced a double down the line in left field past the hustling Kaden Kinsler. Stribling would then score on a base hit by Holden Campbell who would score the next pitch on a base hit by Caden Buxton.
The Owls offense would match the Eutectics in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a lead-off double by catcher Kamron Morriss and a couple walks by the UHSP hurler. The back-and-forth seesaw battle would continue with the Euts scoring two in the top of third followed by Woods putting up a three spot in the bottom of the third inning.
After giving up a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at five runs a piece, the Owls were held scoreless in the bottom half of the frame. Max Benton would allow a lead off single in the fifth, before working his way out of the inning. The Woods bats would not be held scoreless in the fifth as they exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the inning.
This offensive outbreak was sparked by back-to-back doubles off the bats of Matt Hanson and Jacob McWhirter. 11 Owls would step to the plate in the inning, tallying three doubles, two singles, and three walks in the seven-run half inning.
UHSP would be held off the scoreboard for the remainder of the day, but the same cannot be said for the Owls as they rally the bats for another seven-run inning in the sixth. The inning started with a walk earned by Kamron Morriss followed by a hit by pitch as Taylor Hopkins wore one off his front shoulder. Caton and Horton would line a pair of singles to centerfield, both scoring runs. Matt Hanson would get the offense going again, after the strikeout of Niggemeier, with a loud double off the wall in right-center field. The highlight of the inning was a 415 ft long ball off the bat of right fielder Jacob McWhirter that rocketed out over the sign in the power alley.
William Woods called on transfer junior Evan Johnston in the sixth and seventh inning to shut down any offense the Euts could manage. Johnston finished with two innings pitched only giving up one run, while striking out four.
