Owls Offense Proves Tough for Eutectics Pitching

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FULTON, Mo.- William Woods University (18-15-1, 6-3 AMC) hosted University of Health Science and Pharmacy (8-18, 1-8 AMC) for a double header matchup at Backer Sports Complex, winning both games on the day.

Game one featured 19 total runs scored on the day with a combined 24 hits between both offenses. The Woods would pull through in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10 to 9 nine lead that would hold thanks to an outstanding performance from junior pitcher Jackson Truesdell.

The offensive production would be lackluster in the first inning for both squads as they placed zeros on the board in the top and bottom halves of the inning. UHSP would score four unanswered runs between a three spot in the top of the second, and a single run scoring in the top of the fourth before the Owls offense could settle in. William Woods scored in the bottom half of every frame that they came to the plate in for the rest of the game scoring two runs a piece in the third and fourth inning before their offense ignited for a four run fifth inning.

This inning was highlighted by a loud double off the bat of freshman left fielder Kaden Kinsler. With the bases loaded, Kinsler barreled a ball down the right field line scoring all three runners that were on base.

The Owls relief pitcher, Wyatt Fischer, would give up a pair of runs in the top of the sixth when Jackson Truesdell would be called upon to shut down the Eutectic bats. Woods, facing a nine to eight deficit rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to three singles from Matt Hanson, Jacob McWhirter and Sean Goings. Truesdell faced three batters in the top of the seventh inning, retiring all three. William Woods would hold on to win the game 10-9 in the seven-inning contest.

Game Two featured the scorching hot Owls offense versus an exhausted UHSP pitching staff that could only hold Woods off the scoreboard for two frames throughout the contest.

The Woods offense picked up where it left off in the bottom of the first, scoring one run on a two out, solo home run from first baseman Matt Hanson. UHSP, facing a series sweep, would rally the bats in the top of the second scoring four runs off of the Owls hurler Ty Schaffer, who gave up four hits in the inning: two of them being doubles. The Owls offense continued to display their prowess matching the four runs that UHSP scored in the top half of the inning. Vincent Pyeatt would double to left field scoring AJ Willenberg and Sean Goings who both reached on singles. Pyeatt would be brought home thanks to a deep fly ball by Kaden Kinsler that would ricochet off the wall for a triple. The next Owls batter, Jack Niggemeier, worked a favorable 3-1 count and drove a fastball into the gap at the power alley for a triple that would score Kaden Kinsler.

Ty Schaffer settled in on the mound, not allowing any runs in the third and fourth innings. Woods' offense scored in both frames crossing the plate once in the third and twice in the second inning. Both runs coming off of singles to the center fielder hit by Sean Goings in the third and Jacob McWhirter in the fourth. Schaffer would give up one run in the top half of the fifth tallying the score to 8-5 in favor of William Woods.

The Woods red hot offense would plate five runs in the bottom half of the frame. The first two runs scoring on a ball to left field off the stick of Jack Niggemeier, plating Kaden Kinsler and Vincent Pyeatt. Niggemeier would advance to third base after a single by Matt Hanson. Down in the count, 1-2, Jacob McWhirter blasted a hanging slider 417 feet to right center field over the wall for a three-run-homerun tallying five funs in the frame. The Owls led 13-5.

The Owls hurler gave up one run in the sixth after recording two outs, giving up back-to-back doubles from Eutectic sluggers Bautista and Merriweather. Kaleb Haley was called upon to relieve Schaffer, only giving up one hit in his one inning of work.

The Owls bullpen held the UHSP bats at bay giving up no runs for the remainder of the contest as Junior right-hander Carson Prescott gave up on hit, striking out three, in his two and a third innings on the mound. The Woods offense plated one run in the bottom of the eighth to cement a 14-6 victory over their conference opponents.

Overall, on the day the Owls hit .400 as a team tallying 26 hits over the 16 innings.
