Box Score 2 POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - Peyton Clampitt struck out 10 batters in six innings of work on Saturday, but Woods couldn't hold off a charge in the bottom of the seventh, dropping both games in the doubleheader. William Woods (10-10-1) fell 7-1 in game one and 6-5 in game two to College of the Ozarks (9-10) on Saturday.
The fifth inning was the lone bright spot for the Owls in game one, as
Taylor Hopkins singled to lead off the inning.
Matt Hanson extended his NAIA-leading HBP total to 21, moving Hopkins to second. A flyout to right pushed Hopkins 90 feet closer, with
AJ Willenberg dropping a well-placed bunt to score Hopkins and close the gap to 5-1.
Woods was able to strike first in game two, as
Jack Niggemeier took advantage of an error by the Bobcats' Brody Baumann to convert a leadoff double into a run. Baumann plunked
Kaden Kinsler to move
Colby Caton to second, with
Kamron Morriss wasting no time in scoring both Caton and Kinsler with a two-RBI double.
The Owls weren't able to extend their lead further in the first, retiring in order after Morriss's double.
In the top of the seventh, however, Woods managed to extend its lead, as Hanson drew a leadoff walk. Hopkins dropped a sac bunt to move Hanson to second, with McWhirter sending Hopkins to third with a groundout to Baumann. Another error - this time a three-base error - by Baumann allowed Hopkins to score and Willenberg to get to third in a pinch-hit outing.
Jude Gremillion reentered to run for the Owls, but a double by Niggemeier plated him immediately.
In the bottom of the seventh, the College of the Ozarks found a rhythm and churned six runs across the plate to earn the comeback win.
The two teams meet again on Sunday to close out the series, with first pitch in the doubleheader set for 1 p.m.
