Owls Lose both in Double Header at Columbia
Â
FULTON, Mo.- William Woods University (24-22-1, 11-10 AMC) was on the road Wednesday and Thursday finishing their regular season games against #23 Columbia College (36-12, 13-5 AMC) losing game one by a score of 14-4 and game two 9-3.
Â
Game one for the Owls offense was a slow start. The Owls were not able to score until the sixth inning when they put up three runs. Freshman
Kaden Kinsler powered a fly ball into the gap, narrowly missing a home run, for a two RBI triple.
Jack Niggemeier hit a hard ground ball to the right side to bring in Kinsler, cutting the lead to nine runs. The Woods scored another in the seventh inning when
Seth Christie hit a sacrifice fly to bring in
Ian Hickman. William Woods gave up 14 runs on 18 hits to the Cougars, who took advantage of every opportunity to advance a bag. The Cougs scored five runs in the first inning followed by seven in the second and two lone runs in both the third and the fourth innings. William Woods falls short in the seven-inning contest, losing 14-4.
Â
The forty-minute hiatus between games was not enough to slow down the Columbia approach at the plate. The Cougars scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Owls arm
Ty Schaffer. With two outs in the top of the second inning, rain began to fall and the game entered into a 20 minute lightning delay. When action resumed Columbia scored one run in the bottom of the second, but were held at bay by
Ty Schaffer for the remainder of his outing. William Woods would scratch two runs in the top of the fifth inning off of Cougar pitcher Pierce Hartmann.
Taylor Hopkins hit a one out single past the diving glove of the Cougar shortstop.
Cade Irwin roped a double to bring home Hopkins, Irwin advanced to third on the throw to the plate. With two outs in the inning,
Tyler Horton brought in Irwin on a single to left field.
Columbia was held off the board for four straight innings, the first time in the series they had done so. Two of these runs were accredited to Schaffer who finished with 6.1 IP, 9H, 7R, 6K in his outing. The Owls scratched one more run in the ninth inning when
Matt Hanson homered to right center field. William Woods lost 9-3 but showed some fight when faced with adversity.
The Owls head to St. Louis on Tuesday to play in the AMC Conference tournament at Carshield Field in O'Fallon. The Owls are the 4 seed in the tournament and will face off against Williams Baptist University 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
