Box Score CREVE COUER, Mo. - William Woods University (18-16-1, 6-4 AMC) fell to #12 Missouri Baptist University (24-8, 9-1 AMC) in game one of the American Midwest Conference series, 18-7.
Game one of the series saw a plethora of runs scored. Missouri Baptist attacked fast balls early in the count and were able to plate five runs in the first inning off of Woods hurler Ty Schaffer.
The second inning was almost a mirror reflection of the first with the Owls failing to notch the score column, and Missouri Baptist scoring four runs, including a three-run home run.
William Woods entered the top of the third down by nine runs. Woods sent eight to the plate in the inning scoring four runs to cut the deficit to five. In the inning, the owls recorded three singles, a walk, and a 3 RBI double off the bat of Matt Hanson.
Missouri Baptist was able to match the four runs scored in the top of the third, with a three-run blast off the bat of Spartan shortstop Alex Adams. Woods scratched another in the top of the fourth when AJ Willenberg hit a single to left field scoring Cade Irwin and Tyler Horton.
William Woods did not score again until the top of the seventh, despite giving up five runs between the fourth and fifth innings. The Owls were able to throw up one zero in the bottom of the sixth with Tyler Abney striking out one and forcing two pop ups to center field and second base.
The top of the seventh, Woods faced an 18-5 deficit. After the leadoff hitter in the inning grounded out, pinch hitter Joe Celeste, catcher Kamron Morriss, and right fielder Cade Irwin were able to draw walks to load the bases. A balk, and a single later Joe Celeste and Vincent Pyeatt (courtesy runner for Catcher Morriss) were able to score.
The Woods offense could not score any more runs in the inning and the game was called after seven innings with a final of 18-7. The Owls travel back to Creve Couer tomorrow to face Missouri Baptist for the final two games of their series. The first pitch of the double header is scheduled for noon.
