Box Score OSKALOOSA, Iowa - Playing its second contest in a row against a future Heart of America opponent, William Woods (1-1-1) earned a 1-1 draw against William Penn University (0-1-1) on Saturday despite playing much of the second half with 10 players.
Zoe Lockhert notched the equalizer for the Owls in the 46th minute.
"I'm proud of our team facing the challenge of playing down for a good portion of the second half," said head coach
Lauren Robb. "The result didn't go as we planned, but we'll refocus this week and be ready for our next opponent."
Woods forced a quick turnover on the opening kickoff and managed to put together a solid chance inside the first minute, as their buildup down the left wing caused a pair of back-to-back fouls by the Statesmen. The second foul was within striking distance of goal, and as
Lauren Helmert outpaced her defender, she was unable to turn cleanly on the shot and sent it wide.
William Penn mustered its first offensive chance of the match in the third minute, as Alessia Plombo found space at the top of the box. Her shot was parried wide by
Sierra Hahn and the Owls successfully cleared the ensuing corner kick.
The home side managed to find net in the 27th minute as India Foger intercepted a long clearance in the midfield. A direct ball over the top found a pair of Statesmen attackers in space against Hahn, with Plombo dealing the final touch for the goal.
After going into the break down a goal, William Woods immediately found an equalizer at the start of the second half. The Owls put pressure on WPU immediately from the kickoff and forced the ball all the way into the back line. Lockhert was able to step into the passing lane and corral a long ball across the field, and the freshman took a touch and unleashed a rocket into the upper right corner of the net.
With the match back on level terms, William Woods stepped up the pressure and nearly found the lead in the 50th and again in the 52nd minute, but chaos ensued in the 54th as Helmert was sent off for an off-the-ball exchange.
Woods nearly managed to find a goal in the 80th minute from the foot of
Megan Hughes, but her shot was saved by Madeline Danielson.
The teams were equalized in the 84th minute as Olivia Walker was cautioned for hauling down Hughes on the left wing after she'd been beaten on the dribble, and was then shown red for something after the original play.
WWU was unable to capitalize in the final six minutes, however. The Owls return home on Friday to take on cross-town foe Westminster College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the North Campus Athletic Complex.
