Box Score COLUMBIA, Mo. - On Thursday, the Owls took the short trip over to Southwell Complex, and
Sydney Booker posted her sixth double-double on the season with 11 points (5-6 free throws), 10 rebounds and a block as William Woods University (9-13, 7-9 American Midwest Conference) fell 84-48 to (RV) Columbia College (20-2, 14-2).
While Booker did most of the work for the Owls' defense, she did have support on offense as
Peyton Dearing scored a team-high 16 points (4-7 3-pointers and 4-4 free throws) and dished out a team-high two assists.
Unlike the campaign's first meeting, William Woods didn't take the lead. It took the Cougars 43 seconds to go in front for good, with Mya Miller landing a jumper assisted by Mallory Shetley on CC's first drive following an Owls' turnover on their opening possession. Boker ended the Cougars' 8-0 run to begin the game, sinking two free throws with 6:56 left in the first quarter. Just over a minute later, CC earned a double-digit lead the rest of the way at 12-2 on Shetley's second of back-to-back layups. However, WWU kept it a 10-point game (21-11) through one-quarter thanks to Booker's coast-to-coast inside bucket off her defensive board.
In the second quarter,
Layla Young had the Owls' lone make from the field, which put it at 25-13 Cougars with 8:48 before halftime. On top of that, WWU was outrebounded 16-9 in the second. One of CC's led to it achieving a 20-point lead as Shetley pulled down a defensive rebound, and Miller knocked down a 3-pointer to send the Cougars up 37-17 with 2:36 left in the first half. With six seconds remaining, Miller capped the first-half scoring with a layup assisted by Tori Rubel, giving CC a 42-17 lead at the break.
The Owls had their best offensive quarter in the third, making five shots from the field, the same as their first-half total. Dearing converted four of those makes. 4-4 from deep, and hit 2-2 at the line to tally 14 of WWU's 16 points in the third, its most in any quarter. The Cougars got their lead to 30 points (51-21) on Rubel's 3-pointer assisted by Miller with 7:11 to go in the third, and they held a 66-33 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Five of William Woods' 15 points in the fourth quarter came at the charity stripe, with
India Atkins making three free throws for three of her five points in the quarter and Booker two free throws for half her four points in the quarter. Young also had four points in the fourth, and she made a jumper with 12 seconds left, concluding the scoring in the Owls' 36-point defeat.
William Woods collected 38 rebounds (14 offensive) with four second-chance points, scored six points off eight forced turnovers and shot 23.1% (15-65) from the field, 16.7% (4-24) from 3-point range and 87.5% (14-16) from the free-throw line. Columbia pulled down 53 boards (15 offensive) with 13 second-chance points, tallied 20 points off 11 forced turnovers and converted 49.3% (35-71) from the field, 40% (8-20) from deep and 54.5% (6-11) at the line.
The Owls have an excellent opportunity to turn it around against a team they wiped out 77-46 at home on Dec. 14, facing Hannibal-LaGrange University (3-19, 0-16 AMC) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mabee Sports Complex in Hannibal.
