Owls Win Two Individual, One Relay AMC Championship, Take 3rd as Team

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - William Woods University won two individual, Ian Schwierjohn (1,500-meter run) and Jenson Starr (10,000 run), and one relay, Angel Lottie, Oshawi Burgher, Gabriel Soest and Brady Musgrove in 4x400-meter, in the American Midwest Conference Outdoor Championships, held Wednesday and Thursday at Ralph Korte Stadium. On the team table, the Owls made the top three, taking third out of eight teams with 126 points.

"The feather in our cap was our amazing 4x400 team with Angel, Burgher, Gabe and Brady, and Ian and Jenson holding us down with individual golds," William Woods track and field coach Anthony Stockton said. "So many of our men did us proud. Isiah being sick and fighting for his second place in javelin. I have been truly blessed to have my staff and these kids. We still have a lot of work to do, so Heart of America, be ready!"

The biggest of them, Schwierjohn, won the 1,500 for the third time this outdoor season, taking home the AMC championship with a personal record time of 3 minutes and 57.05 seconds to win the race by 3.14 seconds over Columbia College's Kalieb Redda.

Starr shined in the 10k, clocking in at 34:09.07, his first outdoor conference title in his last outdoor season, beating runner-up Will Cherrington of the Cougars by 26.88 seconds.

The Owls stood top of the podium in the premier relay event, 4x400, after Lottie, Burgher, Soest and Musgrove ran an AMC-winning time of 3:20.09, taking it by 2.1 seconds over CC's Jace Carr, Cameron Elder, Conner Diaz and Bernard Bailey.

Burgher notched WWU's most All-AMC performances with three. He made All-AMC in a second relay, the lead runner on the Owls' 4x800 squad of himself, Soest, Wyatt Martin and Schwierjohn placed second at 7:54.93. Competing at that distance individually, Burgher collected a third-team All-AMC accolade in the 800 run at a personal best 1:56.98, his eighth sub-2:00 time over five seasons.

Demario Wright also received third-team All-AMC in a track event for the Owls, recording a PR of 49.29 in the 400 dash.

On the field side, Jamel Jones stood out most for The Woods, picking up two second-team All-AMC laurels in the long jump at 6.49 meters (21 feet and 3½ inches) and the triple jump, setting a PR at 13.44m (44-1¼).

Michael Moore-Fondren made it three All-AMC Owls showings in jump events, taking third in the high jump with a PR of 1.84m (6-½).

Round out William Woods's four field All-AMC displays, Isiah Craighead was runner-up in the javelin at 53.06m (174-1).

Overall, the Owls tallied seven individual and two relay All-AMC honors. Just outside of All-AMC, but making the top five in individual events for William Woods were Wright in fourth in the 200 dash (22.35), Soest in fourth in the 800 run (1:58.23), Martin fourth in the javelin (45.97m [150-10]), Moore-Fondren in fifth in the 100 dash (11.18), Burgher fifth in the 400 dash (50.58) and Dustin Russell in fifth in the 3,000 steeplechase (11:01.91). And, The Woods had one top-five relay showing outside the All-AMC positions: Noah Phillips, Jacob Polacek, Wright and Brennen Stinson placed fourth in the 4x100 at 43.56.

Its final opportunity to record a nationals-qualifying time, William Woods will compete in the USF Fighting Chance Invite next Friday and Saturday at Joliet Memorial Stadium in Joliet, Illinois.
