MARSHALL, Mo. – William Woods (24-17, 15-9 Heart) wrapped up the series with Missouri Valley (3-41, 3-21 Heart), where they would sweep the day and complete their series sweep of the Vikings.
Owls got the scoring started early with a sac fly to go up 1-0 in the top of the first. Woods would continue to tack on to the score with a double from
Justin Dameron and a single from
Ryan Retone to increase their lead to 3-0.
The Vikings would respond an inning later with a three-run home run to tie the ball game back up at 3 apiece. Another run would come later in the inning for the Vikings to take their first lead of the series over the Owls.
Colby Caton would step to the plate at the top of the fourth for the Owls and send a pitch over the centerfield wall for a solo homerun and a tie ball game for the Owls.
Carson Shettlesworth would add another in the top of the fifth with a base hit to score one and regain the lead for the Owls.
Owls would continue their scoring at the top of the sixth as Retone stepped to the plate and also sent his pitch over the centerfield wall for a two-run homerun to increase the lead for the Owls, 7-4. The Vikings would cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 7-5 heading to the final inning.
Woods would continue to build their cushion with a double from
Evan Rainey to score two and a double from
Aidan Gaither to give the Owls a 10-5 lead over the Vikings heading into the final half inning.
The Vikings would not go quietly as they would hit two home runs in the bottom of the seventh to bring the game within one before
Ayden Gates would come in and slam the door with a strikeout and escape game 3 with a victory.
With their near victory in game one, the Owls would get their offense rolling early and often to build a large cushion for Groseclose.
Kaden Kinsler would get the scoring started in the first inning with a solo homerun for his second of the series.
Owls would tally 3 more runs in the top of the second with an error from the Vikings' defense and a wild pitch to gift two runs for the Owls. A
Cam Casso double would cap off the top of the second.
Woods kept the pressure on with another 5 runs in the top of the third, starting with a sac fly from
Grant O'Haver to score Caton. A
Jude Gremillion would plate another two for the Owls as they would keep the train of good baseball going to plate another 2 runs to give them a 9-0 lead.
Scoring would go quiet until the seventh inning, when
Kaden Kinsler hit his third home run of the series, a three-run shot, giving the Owls a 13-0 lead. This put the stamp on the game and the series as the Owls would walk away with a series sweep with the 13-2 victory.
Woods is set to host Missouri Baptist on Friday, starting at 1:00 p.m., for the final conference series of the year at Owls Field.
